Ahoj!

...., excuse my poor english, but:

Yesterday I bought something in a second hand shop, a box with old vhs-recordings of "Ozzie and Harriet". 200 episodes of this old show...

I heard that some of these in the public domain and I want to upload them for this great community, but i dont know, which episodes are fallen out of copyright or aren't protected.

I found this on wikipedia: "Most of the pre-1964 episodes of the television series are in the public domain"

But..., which are "the most".

Best wishes
Mia

I hope that Video-Cellar, our resident expert on copyright, will answer this.

My understanding is that most Ozzie and Harriet episodes are public domain because they lack a valid copyright notice. The notices look something like this:

Copyright by Ozzie Nelson

That's invalid because it doesn't have a year. So it seems that those episodes were in the public domain as soon as they were broadcast.

If some episodes did have valid copyright notices, the ones broadcast before 1964 would have become p.d. if their copyrights were not renewed after 28 years.

Many episodes of Ozzie & Harriet are already here. I would suggest that you sort the episodes that you have by age. Starting with the earliest ones, see whether they have already been uploaded to the Archive. If they have not, check the copyright notices. Those without valid notices could be uploaded.

I'm sure that many people (including me) would really appreciate any missing episodes that you could upload.

The shows have been syndicated for decades so they would probably be legally considered published.

All episodes published prior to 1964 have no registrations or renewals listed with USCO. This would make them all Public domain.

Any episodes published 1964 and onwards that contain an incomplete notice would be in the public domain as well. I can find no registrations or renewals for these episodes either.

There are couple of registrations for video compilations from both the Nelson family and other distributors, but these should not effect the status of the original episodes.

I have seen pd compilations with 100s of eps.

Thanks a lot, Video-Cellar. (By the way, it seems absurd that a show that was aired on television and seen by millions could ever be considered unpublished.)

I'm hoping that the original poster will be able to upload some episodes that are new to me.

Let's hope that the Nelson family will release a box set of the entire run of the show. Having all of the radio shows would be great also, but perhaps nobody has copies of most of them.

One of the best radio episodes is
Ozzie_and_Harriet_461201_096_Ozzie_Runs_For_Office.mp3
and it can be found here:

Please try to determine whether you have any radio shows that are not already here at the Archive.

If you do, someone here can tell you how to convert them to mp3 and upload them.
